Stephen Leyland Smitherman, age 60, of Kansas City, Missouri passed January 7, 2021 at his residence. Steve was born in Waco, Texas, the first child of William Cleveland Smitherman and Alice Louise Leyland Smitherman. Shortly after, the family moved to Bisbee, Arizona, and later to Tucson in 1969. He served in the United States Army in the 1980s, and as a deputy sheriff for Cochise County, Arizona in the 1990s. He moved to Kansas in the early 2000s, working out of Kansas City as a long haul trucker until his death. He had a great love of reading, especially history, and was gifted at all things mechanical, having a lifelong love of motorcycles. He was predeceased by his mother, father, son Nicholas, and cousin Peter Martin. He is survived by his only sibling, Paul Edward Smitherman, aunts Gretchen Martin and Maryann Cochran, and cousins Michael Martin, David Gale, and Jon and Tom Sanderson.
