Steven “Steve” B. McCalmon, 71, of Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026. Born in Kansas City, MO on September 6, 1954, Steve lived a life filled with music, humor, loyalty, and love. His humble spirit, easy laugh, and steady devotion to family and friends left a lasting impression on everyone who was fortunate enough to have known him.

Music played a joyful and meaningful role in Steve’s life, and it was music that first brought him together with his beloved wife, Kathy. Over nearly 41 years of marriage, they built a life rich with laughter, shared dreams, quiet strength, and a deep love for the people closest to them.

Steve dedicated more than 35 years to his work as an insurance broker alongside his late father in their family-owned business, Homeowners Insurance Agency. Known for his diligence and genuine care for others, he helped grow the family business with pride and integrity.

Steve embraced the things he loved with a quiet enthusiasm. He found great joy in music, especially playing the guitar and listening to the sounds of the 60s, 70s and 80s. The Grateful Dead topped his list of favorite groups, and their melodies often filled his home. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed expressing himself through writing.

Summers for Steve meant spending time at the Lake of the Ozarks dating back to his pre-teen years. The lake was a place where he enjoyed water skiing, spending time in nature, and making memories with those whom he loved. He was a fan of NASCAR, and Kyle Petty was his favorite driver. Whether through music, the lake or simple times together, Steve had a gift for turning shared moments into cherished memories.

Steve’s legacy is one of kindness, humility, humor, wisdom, and unwavering support. He showed his love in steady, meaningful ways, and his presence will continue to be felt in the stories, songs, laughter, and memories carried by his family and friends.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathy; his son, Mike (Tara) Howard; his sister, Paige (Paul) Scianna; his brother, Mark (Betty) McCalmon; his mother, Phyllis McCalmon; his grandchildren, Garret Bower and Payton Chappell; and several nieces and nephews. Steve was preceded in death by his father, C. Tom McCalmon.
