Phyllis Gamel of Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away on November 2, 2026 at the age of 85. Phyllis was born July 19, 1941 in Rossville, Georgia to Juanita B. Massey and Charles M. Massey.

Phyllis was a true Southern lady, known for her warm personality and wonderful gift of gab. Phyllis could talk to anyone and had a special ability to make people feel welcome and comfortable. Her beautiful Southern accent was just one of the things that made her so memorable. She was also an avid dog lover who especially adored her poodles and could often be seen walking with them at the Plaza Art Fair or sharing a meal with them on a dog friendly restaurant patio. She was a music lover, avid reader and a dedicated movie buff with an extensive knowledge of films and actors. She was always on the go, attending concerts, movies and restaurants. Phyllis never met a stranger.

With her unmistakable Southern accent and wonder gift of gab, she was a natural at making people feel welcome. Her years as a receptionist at National Dealer Services, Inc from 1982 to 1985 and at U.S. Engineering from 1985 until retirement in 2004 were a perfect fit. Phyllis had a special way of turning every phone call and conversation into a pleasant, welcoming experience.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her mother Juanita B. Massey, her father Charles W. Massey, her stepfather George R. Adams, her sister Barbara M. Burnette, her brother-in-law N. Dean Burnette and her former husband William E. (Bill) Gamel. She is survived by her niece Amy S. Burnette (Woodstock, Ga), her nephew Robert D. (Rebecca) Burnette, (Chattanooga, Tn) and her great nephew Jackson Burnette (Chattanooga, Tn.). She is also survived by her beloved poodle, Bebe, who brought her endless companionship and joy.

A special thank you to the many friends, neighbors and caregivers who surrounded her with love and support during her year-long battle with cancer. Your visits, kindness, dedication and friendship brought her comfort and made such a difference in her life.

In keeping with Phylis’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. She will be remembered fondly by all who knew and loved her.

Memorial contributions in Phyllis’s memory may be made to Wayside Waifs in Kansas City, Missouri.
