Mary Beth Gordon, 76, peacefully passed with loving family surrounding her on April 23, 2025, at Advent Health Shawnee Mission in Merriam, Kansas. A lifelong lover of words, stories, and the arts, she left an indelible mark on those who knew her through her creativity, wit, and unwavering passion for expression.
Born on November 5, 1948, in Kansas City, Missouri, Mary Beth pursued her love of literature and language by earning a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC). Her academic foundation laid the groundwork for a vibrant career as a freelance writer. Over the years, she contributed to numerous publications and became known for her skillful storytelling and insightful prose. She worked for Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) in the mid-80's. While at MARC, she planned and directed a month long, metro-wide public info campaign to persuade area citizens to dial 911, in the event of an emergency. In addition to her writing work, she was also successful in writing grants—an area where her talent for persuasive communication helped bring meaningful projects to life.
In 1994, Mary Beth co-founded Potluck Productions, a creative collective that became a cornerstone of her artistic legacy. Through this endeavor, she wrote, produced, and directed many plays that reflected her witty humor. Her contributions to the local arts community left an indelible mark and provided a platform for diverse voices and stories to be shared.
Mary Beth’s life was rich with interests that brought her joy and connection. She had a special place in her heart for her beloved pets. She delighted in games of chance and strategy. She never met a game that she didn't want to bet on. A gifted gardener, she had a particular talent for growing tuberous begonias. She was also an avid reader and movie watcher.
Mary Beth’s life was enriched by her large and loving family. She is fondly remembered by Christine (Jim) Mansour; Larry (Mary Joy Fant) Gordon; Mike (Kim) Gordon; David (Joanne) Gordon; Therese (John) Roseburrough; Tim (Lorrie) Gordon; and sister-in-law Theresa Gordon. She had 18 nieces and nephews—along with their spouses—and their many children and grandchildren who followed.
Mary Beth was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Rosemary Gordon; her brother John Gordon; and her nephew Aaron Mansour.
