Karen Diane Mathis, born on November 6, 1947, in Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on February 10, 2026, in her hometown. Karen was a beloved wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother, and a supportive sister.
Karen's journey through life began in Kansas City, where she grew into a person of remarkable intellect and warmth. Her mind often drew comparisons to a computer, enabling her to engage deeply with the world around her, especially in her cherished interactions with family and friends. She treasured having loved ones by her side, as her greatest joy came from being with the people she cared most about.
Karen's adventurous spirit led her to Puerto Rico, where she would visit her future husband and high school sweetheart, Lawrence Mathis while he lived there. She found great fulfillment in immersing herself in the local culture, especially enjoying speaking Spanish and forming friendships with the community there. The strong bond she formed with Lawrence culminated in a marriage that spanned over 54 years, a testament to their enduring love and commitment to one another.
Karen is survived by her devoted husband, Lawrence Mathis, Jr., her son, Lawrence (Brandy) Mathis, III, and her five beloved grandchildren: Jasmin, Ashlyn, Serenity, Damien, and Juliet Mathis. Additionally, she is survived by her brother, Gregory Gillis, and her sister, Margot (James) Daniels, who will carry forth her memory.
She was preceded in death by her father, Clarkston Gillis, her mother, Mary Helen Gillis, and her sister, Mary Ellen (James) Collins. The legacy of love and kindness that Karen leaves behind will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew her. Her spirit will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for the intelligence, warmth, and vibrant energy she brought into the lives of others.
