John Henry Rechtin, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully at his home in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 12, 2026. Born on May 8, 1954, in St. Louis, Missouri, John’s life was marked by dedication, creativity, and a deep love for family and community.
After attending Normandy High School where he excelled in football and baseball, John attended Arkansas State University on a football scholarship. His athletic spirit endured throughout his life, manifesting in many years of competitive slow-pitch softball played after his relocation to Columbia, Missouri. His passion for the sport took him to remarkable events such as the National Softball Tournament in Parma, Ohio. It was in Columbia that John met the love of his life, Linda Sue Krummen, and together they shared many joyful years, including cheering earnestly for the Mizzou Tigers.
A committed tradesman, John worked as a plumber and pipefitter for over three decades. In 1995, he proudly joined the Plumbers/Pipefitters Union Local 562, dedicating himself to his craft until his retirement in 2012. Following his retirement, John embraced a new passion – woodworking. His skillful hands created many exquisite pieces for friends and family, and he also generously contributed his work to various fundraisers, reflecting his giving nature and community spirit.
John’s enthusiasm for craftmanship extended into his home, where he built an elevated train track in his basement, a testament to his love of trains. This hobby became a cherished bond between him and his grandchildren, who were the light of his life. John delighted in sharing stories and adventures with his grandchildren, fostering a sense of wonder and excitement within them. His fondness for travel often culminated in large family trips, creating treasured memories with those he loved most.
One of John’s proudest accomplishments was the intricate Christmas scene he would create in front of his home, a beautiful display that earned him first prize in the Christmas Decoration Contest. His passion for making Christmas a magical time was well-known and deeply appreciated by everyone who had the pleasure of encountering his festive spirit.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Linda Sue (Krummen) Rechtin; daughters, Sara Wiercinski and Katy (Joel) Kanne; grandchildren, Luke Wiercinski, Hazel Wiercinski, and Eleanor Kanne. He also leaves behind his sisters, Virginia Derda, Mary Kay (Al) Duncan, and Elizabeth (Pete) Jones; brother, Dan (Tracey) Rechtin; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John Henry Rechtin, Sr.; mother, Cecilia Dorothy (Reiser) Rechtin; sisters, Christine Rechtin, Georgiann Heun, JoAnn Rechtin; nephew, Dennis Derda, and father-in-law, Delbert Krummen.
John’s comfort and peace in his final moments were surrounded by the love of his family.
