Claire Jean Mays

Claire Jean Mays, a devoted mother, veteran, and cherished member of the Kansas City community, passed away on April 7, 2026, in Kansas City, Missouri. Born on November 5, 1957, in Hilo, Hawai’i, Claire’s life was distinguished by her dedication to family, her service to her country, and her passion for cooking.

Claire honorably served in the United States Marines, a testament to her courage and commitment. Following her military service, she pursued a career as an Industrial Cook, bringing great food and joy to students at schools around the Kansas City area. Those who tasted Claire’s meals knew they were made with care and skill, particularly her beloved Hawaiian dishes that evoked her island roots and warm hospitality.

A great cook by nature, Claire’s kitchen was often filled with the comforting aromas of her culinary creations. Her meticulous attention to detail and traditional approach to food made every meal an experience to savor. Beyond her culinary talents, she was a passionate collector who enjoyed gathering a variety of items throughout her life, with the most recent interest being stuffed gnomes.

Claire’s love extended far beyond the kitchen; she cherished moments spent with her grandchildren and indulged in her interest in crime shows during her leisure time. Faithful to her heritage, she often returned to Hawai’i to reconnect with family and the cherished islands of her childhood.

She is survived by her son, Donald Mays III, and daughter, Angela Cameron, who carry forward her memory. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Mays Jr., and her parents, Harry Pacheco and Nora (Kiyotsuka) Pacheco.
